World Refugee Day / Volunteers Needed

Daniel Sarell, Mission Advancement Director for Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio, writes:

"As the Refugee Resettlement agency for our region, Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio hosts an annual celebration with an outing to bring together those who have been welcomed to our community as refugees and to share a festive meal, play games and dance with people of all faiths.

World Refugee Day "Together We are Stronger" will be celebrated on Saturday, June 17, from 11:00 - 3:00, at AMIS (Academy of Multilingual Immersion Studies,1908 Seymour, Cincinnati, OH 45237).

Volunteers of all ages (families welcome) are needed to help set up the event, starting at 9:00 AM; welcome guests; facilitate games and crafts with kids, including facepainting, basketball and soccer; and to help keep the facility clean and take down the event until 4:00 PM.  Volunteers are encouraged to sign up either for the whole day (9:00 - 4:00), a morning shift (9:00 - 1:00), or an afternoon shift (12:00 - 4:00). Assignments will be determined on-site.  All volunteers are asked to be prepared to help with set-up or take down and serve food, as you are able.  Mingling and getting to know the families, providing welcome, hospitality, and joining in is encouraged.

You are welcome to bring a dish to this international potluck.  Catholic Charities typically provides the main dishes. Groups perform ethnic dances from their home culture with the help of a professional DJ.  Families win prizes of much-needed items, like vacuum cleaners, small household appliances, and gift cards throughout the day.
